Game of Thrones is no stranger to mobile game adaptations — there’s Game of Thrones: Conquest, Game of Thrones Ascent, a forthcoming strategy game from Behaviour Interactive…It’s a popular property, and mobile games rake in the bucks and are relatively easy to make. Easy math, easy money.
And now, according to Abacus News, there’s another one on the way: Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming, a war strategy game from Chinese developer Yoozoo Interactive. At China Joy 2017, chief creative officer Cui Rong revealed that the game will feature interactions with characters from the show, each of whom will be presented alongside their personal details and period appropriate clothing. “We want to combine action and scenes creatively to make our users experience the world,” he said.
This is the first time HBO has a given a Chinese developer a license to develop a game based on the series, which is significant because of China’s gobstoppingly huge mobile games market. (Yoozoo’s other games have also been published internationally, just FYI.)
If you’re wondering why the dudes on the one side are holding Warner Bros. Games flags rather than HBO flags, it’s because both of those companies are owned by the same parent company: Time Warner Inc., which was itself recently bought by AT&T. And speaking of companies so big they could buy and sell you several times without you even knowing, Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming will be published by Tencent, a Chinese multinational with its hands in everything from venture capitalism to AI technology to entertainment.
So Game of Thrones has definitely gone global. And actually, even though it’s heavily censored in China (the pilot is reportedly 11 minutes shorter than the original cut — we very much doubt the scene with Tyrion and Ros makes it in), the show is very popular in that part of the world, as this series of Game of Thrones characters photoshopped to look like Chinese street vendors can attest:

There’s no word on a release date as of yet for Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming, but we welcome this new addition to the Game of Thrones empire.
